Why own a cask

A real asset, maturing quietly in Scotland.

By law, Scotch whisky must mature in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years. Own the cask and you own the whisky inside it, while time does the work.

A cask you can stand beside

Not a share, a fund or a token. A numbered cask in a named warehouse, recorded in your name.

Beyond the stock market

Cask values are shaped by age, distillery, cask type, rarity and demand for Scotch. Like any asset, they can fall as well as rise.

Time is the ingredient

Whisky changes as it matures, and older stock becomes scarcer. Longer holds are often associated with higher prices on the secondary market, but nothing is guaranteed.

Few assets end in a dram

Sell it, bottle it, give it away or let it keep maturing. However the story ends, the decision is yours.

Scotch in numbers

Every bottle starts life in a cask.

Scotch is the world's leading internationally traded spirit, and none of it can be sold as Scotch until it has spent years in oak.

Proof of ownership

Cask ownership should never rest on trust alone.

Some buyers in this market have been sold a certificate and little else. Every cask we arrange comes with evidence that it exists, that it's yours, and exactly where it's kept.

  1. 01

A Delivery Order in your name

The instruction that transfers the cask into your ownership at the bonded warehouse. It's the document that matters most, and it's yours to keep.

  2. 02

    An HMRC-approved bonded warehouse

Your cask matures under bond in Scotland, with excise duty suspended for as long as it stays there.

  3. 03

    The full specification

Distillery, cask number, cask type, fill date, volume and strength, recorded and shared with you from day one.

  4. 04

    Insurance cover

Insured against theft and accidental damage, subject to the policy's terms and limits.

  5. 05

    The right to visit

Where the warehouse allows, see your cask in person and taste a sample, by appointment.

  6. 06

    Regular health checks

We recommend regauging about every three years to check volume and strength. It's a chargeable service, and it keeps your record current.

When the time comes

Your cask, your choice.

There's no fixed end date. When you're ready, these are your options, and we'll help with whichever you choose.

  • Sell

We can help you find a buyer through our network. Timing and price are never guaranteed.

  • Bottle

Have your whisky bottled as your own release. Duty and VAT become payable when it leaves bond.

  • Gift

Transfer ownership to someone else. A present that's been years in the making.

  • Hold

Let it keep maturing. Many owners plan for five, ten or fifteen years and more.

In some circumstances, and subject to market conditions and our purchasing requirements at the time, we may consider buying a cask back directly. This is never guaranteed.

Where your whisky comes from

From Speyside orchards to Islay peat.

Region shapes character, and character shapes demand. We source casks from across Scotland's whisky regions, and our Scottish office sits in the heart of Speyside.

  • Speyside

Scotland's distillery heartland. Orchard fruit, honey and, often, rich sherry-cask character.

  • Highlands

The largest and most varied region. Heather, spice and dried fruit, with a coastal edge in the north.

  • Islay

Island whisky at full volume. Peat smoke, iodine and sea salt, with a devoted following worldwide.

  • Islands

Orkney, Skye, Mull, Jura and Arran. Maritime character, from gentle to heavily peated.

  • Lowlands

Light, floral and grassy, and traditionally triple distilled. Some of Scotland's most approachable whisky.

Portfolio distilleries include

  • Ardbeg
  • Benriach
  • Bowmore
  • Craigellachie
  • Highland Park
  • The Macallan
  • North British

Question 1 of 5

What would you like to spend on a cask?

Annual storage and insurance are charged separately.

How mature would you like the whisky to be?

Younger casks have more maturing ahead of them. Older casks are scarcer.

How long would you expect to hold it?

Casks suit long holding periods. They are not a short-term investment.

Do you have a favourite region?

Not sure? Choose no preference and we'll talk you through the differences.

Where should we send your options?

A cask specialist will be in touch during office hours.

The honest bit

Costs and risks, in plain English.

We'd rather you knew all of this before you buy, not after. Please read it carefully, and take independent advice if anything is unclear.

What you pay for

  • The cask itself, at the price agreed before you buy.
  • Storage and insurance, charged every year. Rates vary by warehouse and level of cover, and can rise over time.
  • Optional services such as regauging, sampling, photographs and inspections, which are charged separately.
  • Duty and VAT, payable only if whisky leaves bond, for example when you bottle it.

What to consider

  • It's unregulated. Cask ownership isn't regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. You won't be covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and the Financial Ombudsman Service may not be able to help.
  • It's illiquid. Selling a cask can take time, and neither a buyer nor a price is guaranteed.
  • Values can fall. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results, and you may get back less than you paid.
  • Whisky evaporates. Volume and strength fall as a cask ages. Scotch must be at least 40% ABV to be bottled and sold as Scotch whisky.
  • We don't give advice. We provide information, not financial, investment or tax advice.

Questions

Questions we're often asked.

Can't see yours? Call us, or ask when you request the guide.

01268 204 142Monday to Friday, 9am to 6.30pm
How do I know the cask is really mine?

You'll receive a Delivery Order transferring the cask into your name at the bonded warehouse, along with the warehouse details and the full cask specification: distillery, cask number, cask type, fill date, volume and strength. Where the warehouse allows, you can visit and see your cask in person.

How much do I need to get started?

We work with a wide range of budgets, from under £5,000 to over £20,000. Availability changes all the time, so we'll show you what's available at your level. Remember to allow for annual storage and insurance.

What does it cost to hold a cask?

You pay annual storage and insurance, which vary by warehouse and level of cover and may rise over time. Services such as regauging, sampling, photographs and inspections are charged separately. Ask us for current rates before you buy.

Where is my cask stored?

In an HMRC-approved bonded warehouse in Scotland. While it stays in bond, excise duty is suspended. Casks can't be delivered to your home: whisky can only leave bond once duty and VAT have been paid.

Can I visit my cask?

Yes, where the warehouse permits. Visits are by appointment and follow the warehouse's procedures, and sampling may carry a charge. We'll help you arrange it.

How do I sell my cask?

Tell us when you're ready and we'll help you look for a buyer through our network. Selling can take time, and neither a sale nor a price can be guaranteed. In some circumstances we may consider buying a cask back directly.

Is whisky cask investment regulated?

No. Whisky casks are an unregulated asset. Whisky Investment UK is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, purchases are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and the Financial Ombudsman Service may not be able to consider a complaint. We don't give financial advice, so please take independent advice before you buy.

How is a whisky cask taxed?

It depends on your circumstances. Casks are sometimes treated as wasting assets for Capital Gains Tax, but HMRC looks at each case on its facts and the rules can change. Our team are not tax advisers, so please speak to one. Our article on Capital Gains Tax considerations covers the background.

What is the angel's share?

As whisky matures, a little evaporates through the oak each year, so volume and strength fall gradually. That's why we recommend regular regauging. To be bottled and sold as Scotch whisky, it must be at least 40% ABV.

Can I give a cask as a gift?

Yes. Ownership can be transferred to someone else, which makes a cask a memorable gift for a birth, a milestone birthday or a wedding. Ask us how it works.
