Sustainability

Lower-carbon malt. Proven, not promised.

Green claims are easy to make, so we publish the data. We’ve been cutting carbon from malting since 2007. Now we’re working with farmers on the biggest part of malt’s footprint: growing the barley.

Climate Positive Malt: up to 30% lower carbon.

Malt makes up around 22% of a craft beer’s carbon footprint. Our Climate Positive Malt brings regeneratively grown British barley together with our low-carbon maltings, and every spring sacked malt we make is now Climate Positive.

Regenerative barley, at scale.

We started trialling regenerative farming with HEINEKEN UK in 2021. Now we’re part of its UK programme, which pays farmers a premium on regenerative barley. By 2027, around one in two pints HEINEKEN UK brews will use it. We’ve also run trials with Suntory, and we support the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Routes to Regen project.

The benefits of malt

Our story

Passionate about malt since 1921.

Munton Baker-Munton started making British malt extract in a disused Bedford brewery in 1921, with the Wells brewing family as partners. More than a century on we’re still family-owned, and two members of the Wells family sit on our board.

Being independent means we can think in decades, not quarters. Our profits go back into malt: into energy-efficient kilns, a peating plant in Yorkshire, and the Muntons Academy, which is training our future Master Maltsters.

We’re proud of our heritage, but we’re equally focused on the future.
