What size crane is your lift?

Set the weight and the radius. The answer comes straight off the JRCS Crane Capacity Guide, the load chart we publish for mobile cranes.

Your lift
8 t

Tonnes, including the hook block, slings and any lifting beam.

16 m

Metres from the centre of the crane's slew to the centre of the lift.

For 8 t at 16 m, our chart reads a 60 t crane.

Chart row 8 t, column 16 m

Their chart's own notes: a load radius chart with no allowance for the height of the lift, based on a 20 m minimum main boom; capacities vary by manufacturer and by crane type. Every crane we book is checked in the lift plan. Charts as PDFs: 0 to 20 t and 21 to 40 t.

Contract lift or crane hire: who carries the lift?

Hire a crane under CPA hire terms and you get a crane and an operator. The plan, the appointed person and the responsibility stay with you. A contract lift hands all of it to us.

Not sure which you need? Tell us the lift and we'll recommend the cheapest safe way to do it, with no obligation.

How it works

Three steps from your first call to the load being landed.

  1. Tell us the lift

Weight, radius, site and date, by phone, email or the crane sizer. Not sure of the weight? Tell us what it is and we'll help you work it out.

  2. We survey and plan

We visit the site, check access and ground, choose the crane and write the lift plan, plus a rescue plan if anyone works at height.

  3. We run the lift

Our appointed person, crane supervisor and slinger signallers run the lift with the crane we've booked, to the plan you've seen.

Run by someone who's driven the crane

1024px) 168px, 128px:James Robey in a hard hat and hi-vis vest on a crane site at night.

I have had a passion for and have been involved with cranes since the age of 5, following in the footsteps of my crane driver grandad. At the age of 18, I gained my tower crane ticket.

James Robey, Managing Director, a director since the company began in April 2010

James has worked with cranes at ground level for over 20 years, planning and supervising lifts in construction, for Network Rail, on motorway maintenance and in container movement. Enquiries go to our project support team in Linton, and an appointed person calls you back to talk the lift through.

Our five values: honesty, quality, respect for people, commitment to excellence and dependability.

Questions site teams ask us

Anything else? Call 01440 841100 or email projectsupport@jrcraneservices.co.uk.

How much does a contract lift cost?

It depends on the crane size, the hours and the people the lift needs, so we price each lift once we know the details. The crane sizer above gives you the crane class in seconds; send us the lift and we'll come back with a quote, with no obligation.

Moving the crane closer to the load is often the biggest saving: on our chart, 8 t at 16 m needs a 60 t crane, but at 12 m a 50 t crane does it.

What is the difference between a contract lift and crane hire?

In a contract lift we plan, manage and carry out the lift for you; under CPA crane hire you get the crane and its operator, and your team plans and runs the lift. All our contract lifts are carried out under the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Contract Lift terms and conditions.

What size crane do I need?

Look up the weight of the load against the radius on our Crane Capacity Guide: 8 tonnes at 16 metres, for example, needs a 60 tonne crane. The sizer does it for you. The chart doesn't allow for the height of the lift and assumes a 20 metre main boom, so we confirm every crane in the lift plan.

How quickly can you plan and carry out a lift?

We'll give you dates when we call back about your lift, [usually within two working days of the site survey for a standard lift]. Tell us if the lift is urgent and we'll say straight away whether we can make it.

Do you work in London and outside East Anglia?

Yes. We work across London and the whole of the UK from our office in Linton, near Cambridge. Our gallery runs from York and Manchester to Portsmouth, Bristol and Dover.

Can you supply an appointed person for our own crane?

Yes. We supply appointed persons, crane supervisors and slinger signallers to work with your crane and your team, and we can write the lift plan and the rescue plan too.

Do you carry out tower crane lifts?

Yes. We run tower crane contract lifts in partnership with Falcon Tower Crane Services, as well as lifts with mobile and crawler cranes.

Are you accredited?

Yes. We are accredited under CHAS, Constructionline (Gold) and the CQMS Safety Scheme, and registered with Achilles; contract lifts follow CPA terms. Ask us for current certificates and insurance details before your lift.
