Before You Book on Price, Ask These Questions

National guidance tells trip leaders not to pick a coach on price alone. Here are the questions it says to ask, and our answers, in writing.

Do You Hold an Operator Licence?
Yes: standard international PSV operator licence PF1066137, East of England, authorised for 33 vehicles. Check it yourself on GOV.UK’s free find a vehicle operator search.
Are Your Drivers DBS Checked?
Every member of our staff, in the office, the workshop or behind the wheel, has an enhanced DBS check through Cambridgeshire County Council.
Will Every Child Have a Seat Belt?
Every seat has a belt, and most of our coaches have three-point belts throughout. Our newest have “all-age” belts that sit across the shoulder, away from a child’s neck.
Who Maintains the Coaches?
Our own three-bay workshop at Witchford, on a six-week inspection cycle, with a rolling-road brake test at every inspection.
What Is Your DVSA Compliance Score?
Green, the lowest-risk band of DVSA’s Operator Compliance Risk Score. Only the operator can see the score, so ask and we’ll share ours.
Can Parents See Where the Coach Is?
Yes. Every coach is tracked live, so you can see it’s on its way back before anyone reaches the school gate.

Live Tracking

See Exactly Where Your Coach Is

Every Greys coach is tracked live. Call the office two days before you travel for your coach’s registration, then on the day you can follow it on our map.

  • Blue On the move
  • Red Stopped for a rest break
  • Yellow Engine idling

It’s there for parents waiting at the school gate, for the office checking the 5pm shuttle, and for taxis meeting a coach to take guests on.

About Greys

Est. 1947. Still Family. Still Ely.

Charles Grey started out just after the war, running Ely’s taxis, wedding cars, hearse and ambulance alongside a single 29-seat petrol coach. Three generations on, Greys is still run by the family, from our own depot and workshop at Witchford, just outside Ely.

Our three full-time technicians service every vehicle on a rolling schedule in line with DVSA standards, with a brake test on a rolling road at every inspection. Our drivers are our own, in uniform, with annual Driver CPC training and an enhanced DBS check.

FAQs

Questions Organisers Ask Us

Not here? Call 01353 662300 and talk to the booking team.

How Much Does Coach Hire Cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the distance, how long the driver is with you and any waiting time, so every quote is worked out for your trip. Quotes cover the coach and driver, and anything extra your day needs, such as parking, tolls, ferries or driver accommodation, is listed separately.

A deposit of £200 per vehicle per day secures the booking. The balance is due 14 days before you travel.

Do You Offer Minibus Hire?

Yes, always with a driver. Our 16-seat Mercedes minibus has leather reclining seats, tables, climate control and USB and 240V power, and our 33-seat midi coach suits groups a little bigger. We don’t offer self-drive hire on any of our vehicles.

What If We Need to Cancel?

Let us know in writing. Our terms set out the cancellation charges, which rise as the date gets closer and are higher in June and July. If we ever have to cancel because of something outside anyone’s control, we return everything you’ve paid.

Do Passengers Have to Wear Seat Belts?

Yes, wherever a belt is fitted, and we ask every passenger to wear one. By law everyone aged 14 and over must, and it’s their own responsibility. Children under 14 in the back of a coach don’t legally have to, but on an organised trip with three or more children, each child needs a forward-facing seat with a belt. Our midi, VIP, 53-seat and 59-seat coaches have three-point belts on every seat, so you can fit your own child seats.

Can We Go to London and Back in One Day?

Yes. By law a coach driver can drive for up to nine hours on most days, with a 45-minute break after four and a half hours at the wheel. We plan the timings with you when we quote, and if your day is long enough to need a second driver or an overnight stop, we’ll tell you before you book.

Do London’s Emission Charges Apply?

London’s Low Emission Zone asks coaches to meet the Euro VI engine standard or pay a daily charge, and Bath, Bristol, Birmingham and other cities have Clean Air Zones. Our newest coaches have Euro VI engines; tell us where you’re going and we’ll match the coach to the route. Coaches with nine or more seats don’t pay the Congestion Charge.

Can We Drink Alcohol on Board?

Only with our agreement before you travel, and in moderation. The law doesn’t allow alcohol on coaches going to or from sporting events, including race meetings. Smoking and vaping are never allowed on our vehicles.

What Happens If the Coach Breaks Down?

Every vehicle is serviced in our own workshop, and we keep 24-hour emergency back-up. If a mechanical fault delays you by more than an hour and we can’t get a replacement to you in that time, we waive or refund one day’s hire charge. It’s in our charter.

What Do We Need for a Coach Trip to Europe?

Everyone needs their own passport, issued less than 10 years before you travel and valid for at least three months after you come home. On a first trip, the EU’s Entry/Exit System takes a photo and fingerprints (under-12s just a photo). At Dover these checks happen before you sail, so allow extra time.

ETIAS, the EU’s new online travel permit, hasn’t started yet. When it does, UK passport holders will need one, applied for on the official EU website only.

How Do Airport Transfers Work?

We cover every UK airport, from Stansted and Luton to Heathrow and Gatwick. Cases travel in the luggage hold, away from passengers, and our terminal guides show where to find the coach. At Heathrow, if the coach isn’t in the bay as you come through, it’s waiting for its airport release permit and will be with you shortly.
