01 Why SEMS

One part instead of two. Faster lines all round.

A SEMS screw arrives with its washer already captive on the shank. The washer goes on before the thread is rolled, so once the thread is formed it can’t fall off, go missing or be fitted the wrong way round. Your operators pick one part, not two, and that small change pays back right along the line.

1 + 1 = 1 · the SEMS equation

  • Faster assembly

One pick, one placement. No fumbling for washers and no stoppages for dropped parts.

  • Fewer part numbers

Halve the line items you buy, stock, inspect and count, and the paperwork that goes with them.

  • Lower total cost

Save on handling, storage and assembly labour: the costs that never show up on a unit price.

  • Right first time

No loose washers lost inside equipment, and no joint assembled without one.

07 About Europa

Specials have been our standard since 1995.

Europa Fastenings was founded in Shropshire in 1995 by Graham Hayward and Stephen Cowan, with one aim: to help our customers win business.

We started out supplying UK manufacturers, and our service soon caught the attention of engineers across Europe. Today we supply customers in most European countries, with enquiries arriving from as far afield as the USA, South Africa and Australia.

Our technical team in Shrewsbury works with an established, trusted network of manufacturing partners. That means we can make almost any fastener, at the right price, to the right standard, and stand behind every one.

Look closely at our logo. The bolt is a SEMS: a hex-head screw with a captive washer. It’s been at the heart of what we do from day one.

  • QualityThe right solution, the first time.
  • FlexibilityStandard parts, specials and everything in between.
  • Personal serviceA friendly, professional team that knows your parts.

Bienvenue Willkommen Welcome. We’re used to working with customers right across Europe.

08 FAQs

Straight answers.

The questions buyers and engineers ask us most. Can’t see yours? Call +44 (0)1939 291199 or send us a message.

What is a SEMS screw?

A SEMS (or combination) screw is a screw or bolt supplied with one or two washers already captive on its shank. The washer is fitted before the thread is rolled, so it can’t fall off. You may also know them as screw and washer assemblies, captive washer screws, combi screws, Kombischrauben or vis assemblées.

What is your minimum order quantity?

For bespoke, made-to-order parts our MOQ is generally 20,000 pieces. For smaller requirements, we hold a selection of standard SEMS in stock that can be bought in smaller quantities.

What are your lead times?

Our standard manufacturing lead time is 10 to 12 weeks. Expedited lead times of 5 to 7 weeks are available at additional cost. Standard parts from stock can be ready for collection or delivery within hours.

Can you supply PPAP, ISIR and IMDS?

Yes. We provide PPAP Level 3 packages, with or without IMDS submissions, and ISIRs for initial sample approval.

What sizes and materials can you make?

We cold-form parts from M1.6 to M12, and can quote micro screws from M1. Materials include carbon steel, stainless steel and brass, with a full range of platings and finishes.

Do you work to standards or to drawings?

Both. We manufacture to British (BS), European (DIN), International (ISO) and Japanese (JIS) standards, and to customer drawings that call for tighter tolerances than those standards.

Do you supply outside the UK?

Yes. We supply customers in most European countries and regularly quote for customers further afield, including the USA, South Africa and Australia.

Can you help design a new part?

Yes. Our technical team regularly helps customers develop the right SEMS or non-standard fastener for a new application, from first sketch to approved sample.
