Regular servicing and testing keeps your equipment compliant, safe and productive. Within our delivery area our own engineers can visit or collect faulty kit for repair in our workshops, and Rayleigh is a Lorch Welding Technology Center and service partner for service and warranty work.

Family-Run Since 1969

It Started in a Cupboard. That Customer Still Buys From Us.

In 1969 John Elms and Brian Grisedale went into partnership supplying welding equipment to the local shipbuilding and repair industry. Their first stockroom was a cupboard at Wragg Brothers, a company Elmdale still trades with today.

    The Van Driver

    The team grows from two to four: a salesperson and a van driver, Peter Elms, today our Chairman. Growth along the Thames Corridor buys our first premises in Rayleigh.

  3. 1975

    North Sea

    With oil flowing in the North Sea, an advert in an Aberdeen paper leads to Steveweld, and to new connections in the energy sector.

  4. 1989

    East Anglia

    Building on those connections, Elmdale opens its second branch, in Lowestoft.

  5. 1991

    ESAB

    Elmdale acquires Grainger Welding Supplies and becomes an ESAB distributor. With Peter as Managing Director, more acquisitions follow.

How does SabreGas rent-free gas work?

You pay once for a 10-year right to use each cylinder, which includes your first fill, then pay only for refills. There is no annual rental, no transaction charge and no hidden charges. A 10 litre cylinder of 80/20 argon CO2 costs £127.00 + VAT to start and £27.00 + VAT a refill. Cylinders are filled to 200 bar and tested and re-certified on a 10-year basis by an approved test house. Return a cylinder early and you get part of the fee back as credit: 50% in year one, 30% in year two and 10% in years three to eight.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is free by tracked courier on orders over £60 + VAT (£72 inc VAT) up to 20kg, and welding, plasma and extraction machines are always delivered free. Smaller orders cost £6.62 + VAT. Our own delivery fleet serves E, N, NW, IG, EN, AL, SS, CM, SG, CB, CO, IP, NR and PE postcodes. Large or bulky items, and addresses outside mainland UK, are quoted before you order.

How quickly will my order arrive?

We aim to dispatch in-stock items for delivery the next working day, and we deliver Monday to Saturday. If you need something urgently, call 03333 44 63 63 and we will check stock before you order.

Can I open a trade or credit account?

Yes. Apply online and, subject to credit checks, you get 30-day terms from the date of invoice. Applications can take up to three days. Account customers can order against their account online, save baskets for regular orders, download invoices and proofs of delivery, use click and collect and pay invoices.

Do you repair and test welding equipment?

Yes. We repair welding machines and equipment, calibrate arc welding equipment, test gas equipment to CP7 and CP47, carry out LEV testing and run machine compliance and safety tests. Our Rayleigh branch is a Lorch service partner for service and warranty work. Book online or call 03333 44 63 63.

Which brands do you stock?

Welding machines from ESAB, Lorch, Miller, Jasic and Cobra by Stealth, plasma cutters from Hypertherm and ESAB, Nederman fume extraction, Binzel and Bymat weld cleaning, abrasives from 3M, Klingspor and SIA, Metabo power tools and Key Plant pipe preparation equipment. We have been an ESAB distributor since 1991.

Do you supply other industrial gases?

Yes. As well as SabreGas, our Hadleigh branch is an Air Products cylinder gas stockist, with delivery or collection. Ask the branch which gases and cylinder sizes it holds.

Are prices shown with or without VAT?

Prices are shown without VAT by default, as they are in the shop. Use the Ex VAT and Inc VAT switch at the top of the page to change every price on it.
