Suffolk Gates
Gates of Distinction
Handmade in our own mill and workshop: timber bought in the round, milled and destressed, mortice and tenoned, then finished by hand. Eight ranges, bespoke designs, garage doors and side gates.

We mill, joint and finish every gate in our own workshop at Rookery Farm. Then our own installers fit the motors, keypads and lighting, so your gate is built for its automation from the first cut and one family answers for the whole entrance.

One Circle, Two Halves
Look closely at our logo and you’ll find two names in one circle. Suffolk Gates makes the gates. Suffolk Automated Gates makes them open. Doing both under one roof means the posts, hinges and motors are planned together from the first drawing.

Suffolk Automated Gates
Underground, above-ground and sliding systems with Roger Technology and DEA motors, plus remotes, keypads, intercoms, app control and lighting, fitted by our own installers.

Our ranges are told apart by two things: how much they hide, and the line of the top rail. Choose both, pick a timber and decide how it opens. We’ll name the range, show you one we’ve made and add it to your quote.

Motors sit in steel boxes set into the ground beneath the hinges, out of sight.

The Ranges
Over 240 of our gates and doors are in the gallery, every one made to order in our workshop. Start from a range, or bring us your own design and we’ll draw it up.

Designed for privacy like the Hadleigh, with a shaped top rail that rises for extra height.

The Needham reversed: the curve runs down towards the middle, still fully boarded.

A flat top with open pales over boards. One third open as standard, or any split you like.

The St Edmundsbury reversed: open pales over boards, higher in the middle for a little more privacy.

One of our most popular designs: open pales over boards, with a curve that dips in the middle.

The traditional field gate, built to any size, with extra rails if small pets need keeping in.

Often called an estate gate, and known by its hockey-stick hinge stile.

Bring us a photo, a sketch or an idea. We’ll draw it up in-house and make it in our workshop.

Timber garage doors with a fully mortice and tenoned frame, glazed if you like and automated if you want.

Side gates, garden gates and arched doors, made in the same workshop as our driveway gates.
Every driveway is different, so we recommend the right system on our first site visit. We fit Roger Technology and DEA motors, and set up the safety devices, controls and lighting as one job.

The motors sit in boxes set into the ground beneath the hinges, so nothing spoils the look of the gate. Brushless motors keep them virtually silent, and we make the hinges in-house for a clean finish.
Best for entrances where you’d rather not see the motors at all.

A ram on the inside face of each gate pushes it open and pulls it closed. It’s the most cost-effective way to automate, one of the best options in high winds, and we use Roger Technology brushless motors.
Best for exposed, windy sites and keeping costs down.

One leaf runs sideways, so the gates need no room to swing. A good answer for shorter driveways and very good in high winds, ideally installed on level ground.
Best for drives without space for gates to swing open.

Remotes, keypads, intercoms, video intercoms, exit buttons and smartphone apps, chosen around how your household comes and goes.

Dusk-till-dawn sensors, timers, post lights, uplighters and fence lighting, even set to come on only while the gates are moving.
Safety comes first. We install fully compliant gate automation, test every safety device and show you how everything works before we hand over. We’re on the Gate Safe register of Gate Safe Aware installers, reference GSI_840.

How We Make Them
We do everything in house, which gives us control of every step and lets us make whatever you can draw.
We visit to measure the entrance and check the ground, the room for gates to open and where power will come from, then draw your gates in-house on CAD.
We buy timber in the round and machine it ourselves, ripping and destressing every length so the finished gate stays true.
Every frame is jointed the traditional way, glued and pinned with 15 mm dowels for extra strength against movement.
Edges are bevelled against splitting and chipping, boards fitted, then the whole gate is sanded smooth and wrapped for its journey.
Free delivery in our own vehicles. Fitting them yourself? We can arrive in the morning so you get the most out of the day.
Our installers hang the gates, fit the motors, controls and safety devices, test everything and show you how it all works.
Timber
These are the timbers we use most. Want something else? Just ask: we source timber from all over the world.

Hardwood
Rich in natural oils that resist moisture, warping and decay. Left unoiled it weathers to a silver grey, and it generally costs less than oak.

Hardwood
The classic: strong, with beautiful grain and knots. The most expensive choice, it needs regular care and, being natural, can split as it weathers.

Modified Timber
A modified timber made for stability outdoors, and a good base for a painted finish.

Hardwood
A West African hardwood with a rich, reddish-brown colour.

Softwood
A pale, straight-grained softwood, and a good choice for painted gates.
Worth knowing: every timber changes colour outdoors. No clear finish has enough UV protection to hold the original shade exactly, so choose a timber you’ll love as it ages.

Our Family
In 1979 David Corrie set up Suffolk Fencing and built a good name across Suffolk. He passed his knowledge on to his son Hugo, who started Suffolk Gates in his garage in 1996, making softwood and hardwood gates.
Hugo’s children George and Phoebe grew up mucking in around the yard from the ages of two and four. Today George runs the business as Managing Director, with Hugo leading production and transport and Phoebe looking after marketing.

Questions
Anything else? Call 01284 388388 or email sales@suffolkgates.co.uk.
There’s no single price, because every entrance is different. The cost depends on the gate’s size, design and timber, the type of automation, and the work around it: groundworks, posts or pillars, power, drainage and access control.
The best way to get a real figure is a site visit, so we can measure up and recommend what will work. Ask for a quote and we’ll arrange it.
We install across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. We also supply and deliver gates anywhere on the UK mainland, on our own transport.
Yes. You can buy supply only, manual or electric. Every gate we make suits manual and electric installation, so you can add motors later. If you’re fitting them yourself, we can deliver first thing in the morning so you get the most out of the day.
Underground motors are our most popular choice: hidden in boxes beneath the hinges and virtually silent. Above-ground rams are the most cost-effective and one of the best options in high winds. Sliding gates suit shorter driveways with no room to swing, ideally on level ground.
We’ll recommend the right system on our site visit.
Solar gate automation can run the gates from panels and batteries, so you don’t need to run a cable all the way from the house. Ask us whether it suits your entrance.
Depending on the system, yes. We supply and fit remotes, keypads, intercoms, video intercoms, exit buttons and smartphone app control, and we’ll advise on the best fit for your household.
Iroko resists weather and decay thanks to its natural oils and costs less than oak. Seasoned oak gives the classic look but costs more and needs more care. We also make gates in Accoya, sapele and Scots pine, and we can source other timbers from around the world.
They should be, if they’re installed properly. We install fully compliant gate automation and test every safety device before handover, and we’re on the Gate Safe register of Gate Safe Aware installers.
