Why Hex

Most heat pump problems start on paper. Ours get solved there.

A heat pump is only as good as the system around it. Undersized ground loops, high flow temperatures and guesswork radiators are why some installations disappoint. We design the whole system in-house, then install exactly what we designed.

Certified GeoExchange design, in-house

Founder Andy Howley is certified by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association and the Association of Energy Engineers. He was a founding member of the UK’s Ground Source Heat Pump Association and wrote its Vertical Borehole Standards in 2011.

Groundworks included, not extra

Drilling and trenching are part of every ground source package. We supervise all drilling so boreholes go in exactly as designed, and cut narrow, clean trenches with our own trenching machine.

Designed to run cool and cheap

Room-by-room heat-loss calculations, and underfloor heating designed with the heat pump rather than around it. Our Derbyshire new build runs its underfloor heating at a 35°C flow temperature.

One team for the life of the system

Our repairs and maintenance team services what we install and looks after other installers’ heat pumps too, with engineers trained across multiple manufacturers.

How it works

Inside a Hex system

Every system is designed as a whole: the heat source, heat pump, cylinder, emitters, ventilation and controls. Pick a heat source, then explore each part.

Horizontal ground loop

Collector pipes laid in narrow trenches around 1.2 m deep, where the ground holds a steady temperature all year. We cut them with our own trenching machine and reinstate the ground afterwards.

Rule of thumb: around four times the building’s footprint for a new build.

FAQs

Can’t see your question? Call 024 7699 9382 or email the team.

How much does a heat pump cost?

It depends on the size of the property and how well it is insulated. As a ballpark for a new three-bed detached house:

  • Air source: £11,000 to £13,000
  • Horizontal ground source: £23,000 to £28,000
  • Drilled ground source: from £35,000

All before the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. You get a fixed quote after your survey.

How much space does ground source need?

A horizontal ground loop generally needs around four times the footprint of a new-build house. Vertical boreholes need very little space: each one sits around 8 m from the next.

Will a heat pump keep my home warm?

Yes, as long as the whole system is designed properly. That means sizing the heat pump and the radiators or underfloor heating together. Designed and installed correctly, you get a warm home and as much hot water as you need.

What grants are available?

In England and Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air, ground or water source heat pump when you replace fossil-fuel heating, plus £1,500 more until March 2027 if your property is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas. Heat pumps, solar panels and batteries for homes are also zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.

As an MCS certified installer we apply for the grant for you once your system is commissioned. For a retrofit you’ll need an EPC.

What will it cost to run?

That depends on what you pay for electricity. A well-installed ground source heat pump gives 4 to 5 kW of heat for every kW of electricity; air source gives 2.5 to 3.5 kW. Your MCS quote includes estimated running costs compared with your current fuel.

Do you work on commercial and public sector projects?

Yes. We provide feasibility studies, thermal response testing, design with in-house CAD and Revit, installation as contractor or principal contractor (we’re Constructionline Gold), and planned and reactive maintenance.

Can you service a heat pump you didn’t install?

Yes. Our repairs and maintenance engineers are trained across multiple heat pump manufacturers and look after ground arrays as well as heat pumps. Tell us the make and model when you get in touch.

Which areas do you cover?

We’re based in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and work across the Midlands and beyond, with projects in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Central London.
