Gas saved: median first-year saving in homes measured before and after, England and Wales, DESNZ National Energy Efficiency Data-Framework, June 2026. Costs: Energy Saving Trust, May and June 2026. Every home is different, so we confirm the numbers for yours at the survey.
A clear answer on funding.
Some homes qualify for help. Others don’t. Here’s the position in Coventry, checked against council and government sources on 16 October 2026.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
Open in three Coventry areas
Hillfields, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke. Homeowners and private tenants with a household income under £36,000 or on benefits; the council says you won’t have to pay anything. Landlords there can get 70% for up to four homes.
Coventry City Council no longer accepts declarations. Energy suppliers are finishing existing jobs before ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, and there won’t be a successor.
Today’s local grants become one area-based scheme for lower-income homes from 2027/28. Leave your number and we’ll tell you when it opens for your street.
The Energy Saving Trust says 98% of homes fitted with external wall insulation under ECO4 and GBIS have problems that need fixing. Most come down to five details. Ask any installer, us included, how they’ll handle each one.
The roofline. The eaves are extended so rainwater clears the new, thicker wall.
Windows. Insulated reveals, and new sills that throw water clear of the render.
Ventilation. Checked before work starts, because a warmer, tighter home still needs fresh air.
Pipes and fittings. Meters, pipes and vents moved out and refitted through the new surface.
Ground level. The system starts on a track above the damp-proof course, never buried in soil or paving.
Finishes: smooth or textured render, painted, pebble-dash or brick slips. Had external wall insulation fitted under a grant and worried about it? TrustMark runs free Find & Fix checks: call 0333 555 1234 and choose option 1.
Section through a solid brick wall with external insulation: brick, insulation board, mesh and render, with the five details marked.

Choosing someone to work on your home is personal. Here’s who we are, where you’ll find us and what you can expect.
From Barlow Road to the whole of Coventry and the West Midlands
Our yard is on the Aldermans Green Industrial Estate in CV2. We survey and fit across Coventry and the West Midlands, and we know which streets fall inside the Hillfields, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke grant areas.
Can I still get a free insulation grant in Coventry?
Only in Hillfields, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke at the moment. There, the Warm Homes: Local Grant covers homeowners and private tenants with a household income under £36,000 or on benefits, and Coventry City Council says you won’t have to pay anything. ECO4 and LA Flex no longer take new Coventry homes, and the Great British Insulation Scheme ended on 31 March 2026.
Everywhere else, you pay for the work yourself, but insulation carries no VAT until 31 March 2027. Our grants board shows where each scheme stands.
How much does solid wall insulation cost?
For a typical three-bedroom semi, the Energy Saving Trust puts external wall insulation at about £15,000 and internal wall insulation at about £12,000 (June 2026). Your price depends on the wall area, the finish you choose and access, so we quote after a free survey.
There’s no VAT on insulation until 31 March 2027. After that it’s 5%.
How much will insulation save on my gas bill?
In homes the government measured, solid wall insulation cut gas use by a median 17% and cavity wall insulation by 12% (DESNZ, June 2026). At the October to December 2026 price cap of 7.97p per kWh, that’s about £148 and £96 a year.
Half the homes measured saved more and half saved less, and the biggest wins come with draughty, hard-to-heat houses. We’ll tell you what’s realistic for yours, and the warmer walls are something you feel every day.
Should I insulate inside or outside?
Outside, if your home allows it. External wall insulation keeps every centimetre of your rooms, weatherproofs the wall and gives the house a new finish: smooth or textured render, painted, pebble-dash or brick slips.
Internal insulation costs less but takes about 100 mm off each outside wall, and skirting boards, door frames and fittings come off and go back on. We’ll tell you which suits your home at the survey.
Do I need planning permission for external wall insulation?
Sometimes. It depends on your home and where it is, especially on the front of a house or in a conservation area. We check with Coventry City Council, or your own council, before any work starts.
How do I know if my walls are solid?
Look at the brickwork. If some bricks are laid end-on, so you see short ends between the long sides, the wall is solid. Cavity walls show only the long sides, in an even pattern.
If the walls are rendered, measure the wall at a window or door: over 260 mm usually means there’s a cavity. Most homes built before the 1920s have solid walls.
Will insulation stop damp?
It won’t cure rising or penetrating damp, so the cause has to be fixed first. What insulation does do is keep the inside of your walls warmer, which cuts condensation and the mould that comes with it.
What guarantee do I get?
The external wall insulation systems we fit carry the manufacturer’s 10-year warranty on labour and materials, and are tested by the BBA for a life of more than 30 years. New Worcester Bosch and Ideal boilers come with a guarantee of up to 7 years.
