Who we are

Forty-six years on the forecourt.

Bob Brown and Chris Hamilton started Broham in 1980, and the name is half of each of them. We have built filling stations ever since: for the oil companies, the supermarkets, the motorway services and the independent retailers who now run most of Britain’s forecourts.

We are still specialists. Our own site teams and in-house civils team do the work, and a family-owned group stands behind us with the power, utilities and civil engineering that a modern forecourt needs.

Our story, from 1980

Broham’s sign: Building forecourts since 1980; Motorway service areas built for Extra 3 M1, M25, M40; Ultra-rapid bays at MFG Stretford, our EV-only forecourt 8 bays; Costa Selby drive-thru, start to finish 18 weeks; Grid connections through Broham Energy, up to 132 kV.

Everything on a forecourt

One contractor, from the substation to the shop.

Most forecourt projects juggle a civils firm, a tank installer, a canopy erector, a shopfitter and a connection provider. We bring all of it under one principal contractor. Choose a part of the site to see what we do there.

An illustrative forecourt in elevation and section, from the substation on the left to the shop and jet wash on the right, with tanks, drainage and cables below ground.

The whole site

Eight trades. One programme.

Everything on this drawing is work we carry out or manage ourselves as principal contractor, from the supply in the substation to the coffee machine in the shop.

Try it: choose a part, or tap a number on the drawing.

Part 1 of 8

Power and grid connection

New supplies, substations, LV cabinets, and the ducts and cables to every pump and charger. Our sister company Broham Energy is an independent connection provider, so the connection itself can be designed and built inside the group, up to 132kV.

On site: MFG Stretford: a new substation, LV cabinet and power packs for eight ultra-rapid bays.

Part 2 of 8

Decommissioning and remediation

Old fuel systems made safe and taken out: tanks, lines and structures. Asbestos surveys and removal, contaminated ground, and the notices your Petroleum Enforcement Authority needs before work starts.

On site: Asda Nuneaton: 1960s tanks out, asbestos removed, dye-works ground and knotweed cleared.

Part 3 of 8

Civils, drainage and surfacing

Our in-house civils team lays the drainage, interceptors, separators and attenuation tanks, the ducts and kerbs, and the forecourt slab itself, finished to a standard you can see.

On site: BP Braintree: a 105m³ attenuation tank with a flow control at 3 litres a second.

Part 4 of 8

Tanks and fuel pipework

Excavations and temporary works, tank bases and ballast, new storage tanks and the pipework that feeds every hose, laid out to the flow rate you need.

On site: Asda Sutton-in-Ashfield: pipework designed for at least 40 litres a minute at every nozzle.

Part 5 of 8

Canopy and signage

Canopy foundations, steelwork, decks, fascias and lighting, and the price sign at the roadside.

On site: BP Foley: a canopy built as a Faraday cage, under overhead high-voltage lines.

Part 6 of 8

Pumps and islands

Islands, dispensers and HGV lanes, pay at pump, LPG and hydrogen, installed, tested and commissioned.

On site: Asda Longwell Green: a fully automated eight-pump filling station.

Part 7 of 8

EV charging hub

Ultra-rapid bays with their power, canopy, markings and protection, beside the fuel or in place of it.

On site: Speke, Liverpool: a fuel and EV site for A+F Group, with a 10-bay, 350kW hub for Source EV.

Part 8 of 8

Shop, food-to-go and wash

Sales buildings, extensions and fit-outs, drive-thrus for coffee and food brands, car washes, jet wash bays and valeting.

On site: Costa Selby: a new drive-thru, handed over in 18 weeks, on time and on budget.

What we build

Fuel, food and power. Often on the same site.

Three kinds of work, one team. Most of our projects now mix all three.

Sites we’ve built

Beside open stores, under power lines, over wartime ground.

Every forecourt has a catch. Here are some of ours, and how we dealt with them.

  • The new Asda filling station at Nuneaton seen across a roundabout

    Asda

    Asda Nuneaton

    Nuneaton, Warwickshire

    • 6 four-hose pumps
    • 2 × 75,000 litre tanks
    The catch
1960s fuel tanks, asbestos, ground contaminated by a post-war dye works, Japanese knotweed and a wartime bomb risk, beside a supermarket that stayed open.
    What we did
Surveys and specialist removal first, then a widened road with a new filter lane, surfacing done out of hours and every delivery timed around the store.
  • A BP canopy fascia photographed from below, with high-voltage power lines crossing the sky above it

    BP with M&S Simply Food

    BP Foley

    West Midlands

    • 24/7 filling station
    • Faraday cage canopy
    The catch
The whole site sits directly under overhead high-voltage power lines.
    What we did
We lowered the ground, built retaining walls to the boundaries, and put up a canopy that works as a Faraday cage, with an extensive earthing system.
  • Eight ultra-rapid charging bays painted blue under a canopy at Motor Fuel Group’s Stretford site, with a Londis shop behind

    Motor Fuel Group

    MFG Stretford

    Chester Road, Manchester

    • 8 ultra-rapid bays
    • New substation
    The catch
Turn an old car wash into the North West’s first dedicated ultra-rapid EV charging forecourt.
    What we did
We took down the canopy, laid new drainage and services, installed the substation, LV cabinet and power packs, added jet wash bays with an interceptor and built a timber-frame shop.
  • The fuel forecourt at Leeds Skelton Lake services at night, its red canopy lit

    Extra MSA

    Leeds Skelton Lake

    M1 junction 45, Leeds

    • About £3m
    • Motorway service area
    The catch
A brand-new motorway service area beside Skelton Lake, with fuel for cars and trucks and Ionity chargers.
    What we did
One of three motorway service areas we have built for Extra, with Beaconsfield on the M40 and Cobham on the M25.
  • The new Costa drive-thru at Selby with its outdoor seating and red parasol

    Brookfield Group

    Costa Selby

    Selby, North Yorkshire

    • 18 weeks
    • About £1m
    • Accident and incident free
    The catch
A new drive-thru on an access shared with a Lidl, next to a Morrisons filling station.
    What we did
Phased around both neighbours, and handed over on time, on budget and accident free in 18 weeks.
  • The Asda Longwell Green filling station canopy at night with a van at the pumps

    Asda

    Asda Longwell Green

    Craven Way, Bristol

    • 8 pumps
    • About £1.1m
    • Car wash and jet wash
    The catch
Rebuild the whole filling station on an access road shared with a busy Asda superstore.
    What we did
We demolished it and built a fully automated eight-pump station with 2 × 75,000 litre tanks, a car wash, a jet wash and a 60m³ attenuation tank, with full access to the store throughout.

Why Broham

Why operators keep coming back.

Most of our work comes from people we have built for before. Six reasons they call us again.

  • One principal contractor

CHAS-accredited as a principal contractor: one programme, one point of contact and one team answerable for the whole site.

  • Our own people

Directly employed site teams and an in-house civils team, based around the country, not a chain of labour-only subcontractors.

  • At home on live sites

Supermarkets, hotels, homes and neighbouring businesses stay open beside our sites. We plan access, hours and deliveries around them.

  • Built to the Blue Book

Design, construction and decommissioning to APEA and Energy Institute guidance, with our safety system audited inside and out.

  • The power is planned in

Grid connections, utilities and civils come from inside our group, so the power is designed with the build, not after it.

  • Clients who come back

We have worked with BP for more than 30 years, and keep building for Asda, Motor Fuel Group and Extra.

Our group

More capability. Fewer interfaces.

Broham is part of a family-owned group based at Brooms Barn in Feering. Between us we cover the forecourt, the power behind it and the ground beneath it.

  • Broham Forecourts

Principal contractor for fuel and EV forecourts, shops and drive-thrus. That’s us.

  • Broham Energy

NERS-accredited independent connection provider: grid connections, substations and HV and LV cabling up to 132kV.

  • Pipeline Associates

Multi-utility pipework and civil engineering for water, gas, power and communications, since 2002.

  • Elan Civil Engineering

Civil engineering and groundworks, part of the same group since before Broham joined it.

Safety and accreditation

Safe on a live fuel site.

  • CHAS-accredited as a principal contractor, and Constructionline Gold
  • Members of APEA, the Energy Institute, PEIMF, CIOB and the REA
  • A health and safety system aligned with ISO 45001, audited internally and externally
  • CSCS-carded teams trained in first aid, plant (PACT) and CITB courses
  • Fuel sites designed, built and decommissioned to the APEA and Energy Institute Blue Book

Questions

What operators ask us first.

Anything else, call 01206 210455.

Can our site stay open while you work?

Often, in part. Many of our sites share an access with a store, a hotel or a neighbouring business that stays open, and we phase the work, time deliveries and manage traffic around them. The fuel area itself usually closes while tanks and pipework are replaced. We’ll tell you at the start what can stay open, and for how long.

Do you handle the grid connection for EV chargers?

Yes. We plan the power alongside the rest of the build, and our sister company Broham Energy, an independent connection provider, can design and build the connection, substations and cabling up to 132kV.

Do you work for independent retailers as well as the big networks?

Yes. Alongside BP, Asda, Motor Fuel Group and Extra we build for independent retailers and dealer groups, from a pump upgrade to a brand-new site.

Where do you work?

Across Great Britain. We are based in Feering, near Colchester, and our recent sites run from Norwich and Canvey Island to Bristol, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool.

Can you take out old tanks and deal with contaminated ground?

Yes. Decommissioning and remediation are a big part of our work: making fuel systems safe, removing tanks, lines and asbestos, and treating or removing contaminated ground, with the notices your Petroleum Enforcement Authority needs before work starts.

Can you design the site as well as build it?

Yes. On design-and-build projects we take on the construction design too. At Asda Sutton-in-Ashfield that included the fuel installation design, drainage approvals, building regulations and discharging the planning conditions.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We are CHAS-accredited as a principal contractor and hold Constructionline Gold, and we are members of APEA, the Energy Institute, PEIMF, CIOB and the REA. Ask for our prequalification pack and we’ll send the lot.
