No. 01 · Market notes · October 2026

October: squash takes the starring role.

Every month we write up what’s good at market, what’s worth a punt and what’s about to get tricky. Here’s October, in brief.

At its best

  • Pumpkins and squash. Crown Prince and Muscat pumpkins, with colourful Harlequin, Spaghetti and Acorn squash. Butternut runs deep orange and very sweet when slow-roasted.
  • English Cox’s. At their sweetest and crunchiest all month, so season the tarte Tatin pans.
  • Turkish black figs. In full swing, great value, and good on starter and dessert menus alike.
  • Cavolo nero, Savoy and English Primo cabbage. Cavolo nero arrives this month; Savoy and English Primo are still very good. English purple sprouting broccoli too, with minimal prep.

Worth a punt

  • Quince. Sunshine-yellow fruit from France and Greece. Make membrillo for the cheese board now; it keeps in the fridge for a year.
  • Piccolo parsnips. Small, sweet baby parsnips. Like Chantenays, there’s no peeling: just top them and cook whole.
  • Salsify. Mash it, roast it or deep-fry it for a twist on chips.
  • English Jerusalem artichokes. Mashed with plenty of butter and cream for an indulgent side.

Heads-up

  • Seedless grapes. Supply can get difficult in late October, so expect prices to be unstable.
  • Local baby veg. Beetroot in three varieties, fennel, turnips and leeks, for as long as Mother Nature allows. Baby carrots finish first, so get them while you can.
  • European plums. They start the month well, then fade.
  • English strawberries. Time to say farewell.

“Remember not to eat them until they’re squidgy-ripe, or they’ll taste worse than soap.”

Coming in November

Flame-orange satsumas and leaf clementines, forced rhubarb, and the best time to buy cranberries before the Christmas rush pushes up prices.

No. 04 · Provenance

Close to home. And as far as it takes.

We’re based at Foxash Estate in Lawford, on the Stour estuary between Colchester and Ipswich, where Essex meets Suffolk. Every day we buy from the London markets, from local growers and from further afield.

Close to home, that means baby veg from Remfresh in nearby Ardleigh. It means wild garlic and rhubarb in their season, Suffolk cheeses and Bungay raw butter. When the local crop finishes, baby veg comes from Nurtured in Norfolk and further afield.

Good questions, straight answers.

Where do you deliver?

We’re based at Foxash Estate in Lawford, near Manningtree, on the Essex–Suffolk border between Colchester and Ipswich. Delivery days depend on where you are, so send us your postcode and we’ll confirm them before you place an order.

What’s the order cut-off?

For fresh bakery bread, cakes and pastries, and prepared vegetables: order by 3.30pm for next-day delivery. For everything else, we’ll confirm your cut-off when we set up your account.

Is there a minimum order?

We’ll go through order sizes and account terms with you when we open your account, before you commit to anything.

Does anything need ordering ahead?

Yes, quite a few specialist lines. Some herbs, micro cress, some peas and shoots, and dairy lines need 48 hours’ notice, and so do edible flowers other than violas, which we stock. Suffolk and Norfolk cheeses (we keep limited stock of Baron Bigod and Bungay butter rolls) and some other speciality cheeses, most wild mushrooms, gluten-free bread, Hovis Granary and Seven Seeds, and some fruit, veg and salad lines are pre-order only. Everything that needs ordering ahead is marked on the product list.

How do I place orders?

By phone on 01206 233471, or by email to sales@angliaproduce.com.

Can you get something that isn’t on your list?

Often, yes. If there’s something not on the list, send us a message or call to see if it’s available, and we can source it for you. Other cheeses are available on request too.

Why do prices change?

Fresh produce is priced by the market, and the weather moves it: heat, drought, frost and short harvests all play a part. Our monthly market notes flag what’s getting tricky, we share updates from our suppliers on our Info page, and you can ask us for current prices any time.

Are you food-safety certified?

Yes. We’re certified to the Micron2/STS Food Safety Standard, Issue 11, for Storage & Distributors, through a UKAS-accredited certification body. Frozen products are outside the certificate’s scope. You can view the certificate in the Food safety section above.

Where can I find allergen information?

Ingredients and allergen sheets for our bakery bread, cakes and pastries are on our Info page (opens in a new tab). For anything else, email sales@angliaproduce.com.

Do you deliver to homes?

Yes. Email homedeliveries@angliaproduce.com with your full name, address and phone number.
